St. Scholastica Monastery
Fort Smith, Arkansas
In 2003 St. Scholastica, a Benedictine community of women, renovated their chapel in anticipation of their 125th anniversary of foundation in 2004. This altar was part of the furnishings commissioned for the space. The mensa is square allowing the community to surround the altar with no front or side. The legs repeat a chevron pattern found in the original altar in the chapel. The simplicity of the altar, in both material and form, reflects the monastic character of the community.
