St. Francis of Assisi
Ann Arbor, Michigan
This sculpture group celebrates that moment when the Holy Family enters the Temple in Jerusalem. It is the eve of the event when his parents find Him teaching the elders. Joseph proudly gestures with enthusiasm toward the Temple. Mary reveals the quiet joy and concerns of a mother. As the first teacher of Jesus, she assists him in putting on that tallith - the Jewish prayer shawl that signifies submission to God and acceptance of the mission of adulthood. The young Jesus strides forward ready to accept the obligations of His Mission. The entire group is surrounded by votive lights and stands at the entrance to the church, metaphorically leading into the heavenly Jerusalem.
