St. Scholastica Monastery
Fort Smith, Arkansas
In 2003 St. Scholastica, a Benedictine community of women, renovated their chapel in anticipation of their 125th anniversary of foundation in 2004. This Presider's chair was part of the furnishings commissioned for the space. The community's stylized version of the Cross of St. Benedict is seen on the chair back. Designed to reflect the traditional monastic choir stall, the seat is remarkably comfortable. It was first used by the Bishop of Little Rock at the community's 125th anniversary celebration.
