Cross of the Berthold Missal
Trenton, New Jersey
The church of the parish for which this cross was designed is identical in many respects to French Romanesque churches of the 11th and 12th centuries. With this in mind, the design of the figures was based on a manuscript from that era: the Berthold Missal. The reverse of the cross features the Lamb of God surrounded by cherubim and the symbols of the Four Evangelists. The size of the cross inspired the creation of a men's ministry of Cross Bearer, since the piece was too heavy for young servers to handle.
